The Flower Field of Brussels

Living in Carlsbad, the annual event of the flower fields is a wonderful rite of spring.  A hillside filled with vibrant colors in every shade of the rainbow announces the arrival of the season.  In Brussels every few years they have their own special version of amazing color, design and floral” wow”.  The flower carpet lasts only for a few days, but those days are something special to experience.

Grand Place

As luck would have it that flower carpet was being installed in Grand Place when we arrived and opened the day we were due to leave.  So before heading east, we ventured to enjoy the Begonias of Belgium.   Begonias in Belgium are like tulips in Holland and this display is designed to help promote the beauty of the flowers.  It would be fair to say is quite successful in doing that.

We arrived and spent time in Grand Place wandering the square to see the beautiful flowers.  Some creative climbing and working the crowds to get the right pictures allowed us to take it all in.  We also had a chance to visit the lace shops to let Siena get the lace fan she was so enamored with on day one.  Second to chocolates (and possibly in a dead heat with beer), lace is a very Belgium specialty.  Thankfully we had much travel ahead of us, so we managed to limit what we had to carry, but the lace was exquisite and we brought home some special pieces to remember our trip with.

After a flowerful morning we boarded a train and headed to Amsterdam.
