The Artist Within

In Siena’s ballet camp this summer they asked the children, what do you want to do when you grow up?  For some reason there was a run of cupcake bakers in her camp, but when they got to Siena she said, “I want to be an artist”.    This isn’t the first time she has said that and she has a creative spirit that make it a good option for her today.    Day one in Amsterdam was a good fit for Siena’s creativity.

Rijks Museum

We headed to the Rijks Museum to start the day and as we spent time looking at the art work, Siena took to drawing what she saw.  A quick trip to the gift shop provide some colored pencils and a sketch pad and Siena’s Amsterdam adventure had begun.    She started with an ink sketch of the Portrait of Adila Christina Assink (and her dog).

She followed this up with a study of the Night Watch and a sketch of the Portrait of a Girl Dressed in Blue.    Driven to draw what she sees as best she can, she started the picture 3 times before she got it where she wanted it to be.

As we left the museum and headed into the garden the rain stopped and Siena got to experience what it is like to be inside a fountain.  She loved wandering through the garden and then took some play time in the park.  She is after all still a little girl taking a very big person trip.

She also got comfy in the I Am Amsterdam sign.

Play time

We closed the day with another dinner of Mussels.  This time Lisa caught the last dinner they had left for the night and got a pot filled to the brim with 87 Mussels.  Yep, she ate them all.  As she did throughout the visit Siena entertained the restaurant staff with tales of her trip and a windmill drawing.   She also gave mommy a special present she had bought for her earlier in the day.   A full and fun day.
