Bienvenue Chez France

We arrived in France completely exhausted from a week of travel and an overnight (late-afternoon for us) flight.  Slightly rested we collected our things and headed to our tiny (considered full size) rental car.  Loaded in we headed west to Normandy.   With our best straight drive pilot (Lisa) behind the wheel we hit the road. With Siena and Dave nodding off and Lisa hanging on, we drove about 4 hours toward our first night’s stay in Pontorson.

Le Mont St. Michel
Once we arrived, we settled into our hotel and got a pizza down the road for a quick dinner.  After a quick trip to see our day 2 sight-seeing location glowing in the night sky, we headed back to the hotel and quickly passed out.

The Archangel St. Michael
Day two got underway late in the morning.  Croissant for the road and we were off to Le Mont Saint Michel.   The abbey on the island in the English Channel sits atop a small village.  With an extensive history as a church and a prison, the abbey was built across the centuries beginning in 708.  It is a fun tour and the third most visited sight in all of France (behind the Eiffel Tower and the Louvre).   And yes, like the picture suggests, it is all uphill.
At the Mont

Luckily for us Siena was excited to be on her first day of vacation and walked almost all the way up on her own.  This was an impressive feat for a three year old (and a 45 year old too).  At the top we toured the abbey and the many rooms within it.  Half way along the tour Siena made some new friends from France.  She adopted a new family and walked the rest of the way with sisters Rachel and Claude.

As we journeyed back down we stopped in the chapel of St. Michael and Siena and Lisa lit a candle for Grandpa Doug.   While we are excited to be on vacation and getting away our hearts remain heavy with the loss of Lisa’s dad last week.

After a good day of exercise at Le Mont we jumped in our car and head to the Loire Valley and our stay at the “castle”.  More to come as we journey through France.
