Okay, so she didn’t exactly ask me to take her to a game. However, May was a special month for Siena as she went to her first two baseball games all in the same weekend. Yes, that’s right 2 games.
Her first game was an Angel’s game against the Seattle Mariners. We were lucky to get some great seats for the game from my boss (thanks Gus and Linda!) and we were joined by our good friends Dori and George Steele. Elliot (no I didn’t even come close to winning American Idol) Yamin sang the National Anthem and Take me out to the Ballgame. The Angels didn’t do so well. But Siena absolutely loved the game. Her eyes were as big as saucers as she tried to take in all the lights, sights and sounds of the game. The game was followed up with a fireworks show, Siena liked those too. In all a great night with great friends and some wonderful memories.
Two days later, we were off to San Diego for Siena’s first Mets game. Yes, I plan to torture my child like my dad tortured me; she will be raised as a Mets fan. I spent most of my young impressionable years rooting for the annually disappointing Mets. I had a moment in the sun in 1986 and a glimmer of light in 2000. But, most years I was usually disappointed. My friends were mostly Yankee fans, so they had a little more to smile about. Alas, being a Met fan does build character.
Well Siena, welcome to the clan - San Diego 18, Mets 6. No it was not a football game, they actually played baseball. On the way home I explained to her that while it was nice to see the team’s entire pitching staff in one game (they were all horrible that night) it wasn’t really optimal. Yes, being a Mets fan takes a special mettle and the boys of summer gave Siena a dose of what it takes to be a fan right away. While I don’t think Siena will ever get to enjoy the likes of Marv Thornberry, there will be highs and lows.
Baseball appears to be a winner with Siena. The Mets come back to town next month to play the Dodgers and we will try again to see if Siena can find a reason to clap her hands and cheer for her team to win. Let’s Go Mets!
