Our house, in the middle of our street
Our house, that was where we used to sleep
Our house, in the middle of our street
The words come from a song by Madness, the band name may be more appropriate than the song lyrics when we reflect back on our move from Orange County one day. But for now the madness comes with sadness as we said goodbye to our home of 12 years this past weekend. No longer residents of the OC, we are on to our next adventure in San Diego.
Until we settled into our home in Trabuco Canyon, I had never lived in one home for more than a few years. Life seemed to take me on journey after journey to new places. New Kid In Town was more my theme song in life. But life in Southern California is hard to leave and it is even harder to move around here given the ever growing home prices, so we stayed in our happy little home for 12 years.
12 years seems like an eternity when you think about it, but as we left our home for the last time on Saturday, those years of memories flew through my head in an instant. Here we started our family. First our marriage, then our puppy and then our little girl. They all originated in this home. All our highs and lows, love and losses brought us to the same protective shelter.
In our home we enjoyed countless good times and shared our lives with so many amazing friends. Home to all four of Siena’s birthday parties, her first steps as a baby and four years of growth charted on the wall next to the tree mommy painted for her. The backyard perch from which Bella could look out over the neighborhood and voice her thoughts on passersby. And the place where we enjoyed countless beautiful sunsets (that was the reason we bought the house to begin with).
All these memories and so many more come to the forefront as you frantically pack up your things (and realize you have not thrown anything away over 12 years) and set course for a new home. Luckily the things that are most important come with you. Your family, the friendships you’ve built, sunset kisses and memories that will last a life time don’t get put in boxes, you carry them in your heart and use them to bring warmth a new home.
We look forward to sharing our new home with all of you soon.
