Feeling Brave

Does taking a three year old to the movie theater require bravery?  Yes, and it also requires pre-screening of the movie.  We recently took Siena to see Brave, Disney's latest movie offering with their newest Princess, Merida.

A girl with long, curly red hair stares at the viewer holding a bow and an arrow. Behind her is the film's title while at the left shows a bear staring at her.

Lisa and I saw the movie the week before as part of a date night double feature.  To take your child to the movies these days you need to be able to preview the movie first.  Disney does a great job marketing their movies and Siena was exposed to that marketing blitz.  She just had to see Merida!  So we went first.  We decided what scenes were to violent for our little girl and then conveniently went to the rest room or to buy popcorn when scary things happened.

With some good planning, we had a nice movie night with our friends Kallie and Guy Heaton (who must think we are crazy for our over analysis of the movie going experience).  I think my mom would simply have put her hands over my eyes when scary things happened, but we went the extra yard and left the room.  Crazy, maybe, but there will be lots of time later in life for scary bears.

The movie was good. Now, what are we going to do about the scary scenes when the DVD comes out?  Parental dilemmas they never end.
