Being a parent isn't easy, but it really isn't rocket science either.
So when we do simple things that make our children excited and create a safer
environment for them we should celebrate our success.
Case in point, I recently made a “major” adjustment in our kitchen (really
just a minor thing in reality, but major to Siena). Our little girl is
becoming more independent every day and as such she wants to show us she can do
more things for herself. One of her favorite things to do is to climb on
anything she can move to get things we put up high (i.e. - the TV remote). She
moves stools, chairs and her kitchen helper.
She stacks pillows, whatever it takes to get up higher. With the clear risk of disaster just around
the corner, we decided to move some things down.
So, her cups and plates are now in a lower cabinet. We leave the remote where she can reach it or
we hide it completely. Her yogurts are
low enough to serve herself as are her snacks.
Amazingly, she is also now tall enough not to need her little step
stools, so maybe it will be all for naught.
Either way for a brief moment in time our little girl felt empowered to
some things for herself and this made her very happy. A little win for everyone.
