Twas the Night Before Christmas

A special Christmas Eve started this morning with an unexpected Christmas gift, a power outage.  Yes, Christmas baking and holiday TV specials were preempted this morning by SoCal Edison.  The power was out from 6 am to 6 pm.  So this Christmas Eve, we received the gift of unplugged family time to enjoy the spirit season.

Siena didn’t really understand why nothing would turn on all day, but she adjusted and found so many other things to do.  We got out of the house and spent time getting a few errands run and enjoying each other and Bella.   We managed to make it to the 4:30 pm children’s service at church.  While not the usual candlelight service, it was perfect for Siena.  A child focused message filled with music.

When we got home from church we lit lots of candles and wandered around the house with a flashlight.  Siena took the lead and was in charge of the flashlight.  The house had a warm glow and felt very festive.   Just as I was thinking through how to grill lobster, the lights popped on, and suddenly we were back in business.  I can’t lie, I was kind of disappointed.  There was definitely something special about Christmas Eve by candle light.

With the juice flowing again we enjoyed a special Christmas Eve together.  Siena and mommy began a special new holiday tradition of baking cookies for Santa.  Simple cookie press cookies but so special for Siena as she helped mix them and prepared the dough.  She was also in charge of cookie taste testing.  It was another of those moments where you can see your little girl growing up so fast.

We shared a “light” meal of prime rib topped with lobster and finished off with Christmas cookies.    Then we set the table for Santa and his reindeer.   With her note to Santa place beside the cookies we headed off to bed.  The combination of excitement and cookies made it very hard for our little girl to get to sleep tonight.

Look, I'm a reindeer!
Now all snug in her bed, operation Santa is underway; toys are wrapped and some assembly required items assembled.  In a few hours we will get to see Christmas through the eyes of our three year old daughter.  I can’t wait; it is bringing back childhood memories of bubble lights, popcorn garlands and too much tinsel already.

A Merry Christmas to all, and to all a good night.
