Traditions, they just seem to attach themselves to holidays. Traditions become annuities for our activities and are created by special remembrances we want to enjoy over and over again. They become part of our personal and social being and source of happiness and fulfillment.
Lisa and I have developed collection of traditional things we do for the holidays. Our traditions always begin with Thanksgiving with the Carfioli and Gosswiller families, holiday gatherings and dinners with the Strengers and Heatons and finally Christmas dinner with the Valkers. We are lucky to have been adopted by so many wonderful friends in California.
But one of the most special traditions we have shared, since before we moved out to the West, is Christmas in New York City. Being a native New Yorker, I am obviously a little partial to the place. If you aren’t a NYC fan, then you need to go at Christmas time. At this time of year, New York glimmers with charm and warmth like no place I have ever been. There is simply so much to see, do and enjoy. With only one exception (our dog Alex’s last Christmas when she was too ill for us to leave her), we have always found our way to New York to simply be tourists for a few days. This is our Christmas tradition.
Over the years we have had the opportunity to host get-togethers with our friends and families. We have had friends join us for the trip to share the experience and always are open to having others share this special journey each year. We have enjoyed the theater, sporting events and restaurants that make New York special. But the best part of our trips is when we simply walk around town holding hands and taking in the sights and sounds of Christmas in New York. We see all the seasonally decorated windows, the Angel Tree at the Met, take a picture by the tree in Rockefeller Center and try to absorb the holiday spirit.
This year we managed a quick 2 day trip to New York. To our disappointment, we didn’t have time to get to visit with everyone we would love to have seen. But we did keep our tradition alive! If you haven’t been to New York at Christmas, take a minute and catch some of pictures from this year’s trip, we’d love to have you join us next year when we enjoy our annual Christmas tradition. Happy holidays to all!
